How you will spend your time

This role will allow you to develop your existing engineering knowledge and offer challenges to hone your skills in electronic design and engineering disciplines. You’ll form part of a team, contributing to product development, verification, and overall project delivery. The results of your work will be important to our clients who operate at the forefront of technologies using embedded hardware and software.

As part of the team in you’ll both develop yourself and contribute to the value we bring to our clients who operate across a wide variety of applications from lowest power IoT devices to highest speed home entertainment broadcast receivers. You will work in a flexible environment reporting to a Group Lead or Project Manager and will have considerable exposure to our clients and other partners. You will need to bring a sound engineering knowledge, be able to learn ‘on the job’ and have first-rate communications skills.

What you will need to bring

Mandatory Skills

  • A minimum of five years’ experience working in consumer electronics or other embedded systems from a hardware design and development perspective.
  • Ability to understand complex engineering issues and clearly communicate them to non-technical stakeholders, via email, phone, and other methods.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, written and spoken.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of electronic hardware design principles.
  • Will have already completed a portfolio of product development and deliveries.
  • Knowledge of printed circuit design principles.
  • Ability to apply existing knowledge to learn other CAD systems for schematic entry and PCB layout.
  • Clear and demonstrable skills to design and develop to an agreed specification, taking product and project schedule requirements into account.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of electronic hardware testing and debug.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Creation of product requirements specifications.
  • Contributing to design reviews and critique.

Desirable Tech Skills

Experience with any of the following is useful, although not required. The ability and willingness to learn is just as important.

  • Experience of IoT technologies
  • Experience of wired and wireless network technologies
  • Knowledge of modern software and scripting techniques
  • Project planning and estimation skills
  • Able to contribute to architecture-level design.

How you will spend your time

This role will challenge you and push you out of your comfort zone, so we’re looking for an engineer with a relevant degree, around two years’ industrial experience (minimum) and a keen interest in electronics. You’ll start by learning about the technologies & tools that the hardware team use to go about delivering products and projects to our customers. By working as part of the team you’ll begin to produce your own work results, valuable to our customers who operate at the forefront of technologies using embedded hardware designs across a wide variety of applications from lowest power IoT devices to highest speed home entertainment broadcast receivers. You’ll ideally have sound theoretical knowledge, an ability to learn “on the job”, and excellent communication skills.

As a Senior IT Recruiter, you’ll provide a comprehensive recruitment service for some of our key programmes and projects. We recruit for Software Engineers, Hardware Engineers, Integrators, and Architects, amongst other things. You’ll need to speak the lingo, and have considerable experience in technical recruitment already, to help you hit the ground running.

People with the right kind of expertise (C, C++, Java, Android, Embedded Linux) aren’t easy to find. That means you’ll need to be adept at proactive candidate search, using LinkedIn Recruiter and other tools. You’ll couple this with an honest, authentic approach and a real belief in adding value with every interaction.

Part of your role will be managing an extensive network of suppliers, including recruitment agencies, contractors, and other service providers. You should be confident managing these kinds of relationships, including dealing with any issues – whether practical or contractual – and negotiating terms on a variety of business-to-business agreements, whilst keeping an eye on all of the relevant rules and legislation.

How you will spend your time

  • Working with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to define product or technology requirements, whilst suggesting suitable solutions to complex technical problems.
  • Designing and architecting various software and system modules that come together to form a fully functioning solution, which works to the customer’s specification and timeframe (including CPE, Back-end, Third-party services, etc.).
  • Defining sub-systems across a range of products and technologies.
  • Developing well-structured design documents, roadmaps and specifications.
  • Advising on project progress and development, including design, technology choices, life cycles, costs and resource availability.
  • Pre-sales technical support and evidencing RED’s capabilities to a variety of customers, including trade shows and industry forums.
  • Contributing to commercial documents, including RFP’s, RFI’s, Statements of Work and White Papers.

Mandatory Skills

  • A strong track record in software and systems architecture within a technology-focused business
  • Experience must include developing software and services for either Telecommunications or Pay TV operators

How you will spend your time

In this role, you’ll build on your proven experience of software development and add in the ability to lead and inspire your team.

In footballing terms, you’re the Captain, not the Manager. You’ll still be in a hands-on technical role, working day-to-day in a Scrum team, but you’ll be the one your colleagues look to for support, to set their technical direction, help them out of sticky situations, and advise them on the right approach to a problem. Our clients will know you as the most dynamic member of the team (though not necessarily the most senior in years) and as someone they can rely upon to answer their questions and explain difficult technical stuff in a down-to-earth way.

You’ll have excellent knowledge of software development. We mainly use C++ or Java, so experience with those is really helpful, but if you can show expertise in other languages, good theoretical knowledge and an ability to learn quickly we’d still love to hear from you.

You’ll generally be part of an established Agile (Scrum) team. While Scrum teams don’t officially have leaders, you’ll be able to use your experience to offer support and advice to other members of the team.

The work involves the delivery of a wide array of bespoke customer projects – you might be working on anything from the next generation of TV streaming box to a new embedded Internet-of-Things device that might sit at the heart of the home of the future.

Our customers value our expertise and industry experience, so they will look to you for advice, feedback and solutions to a variety of technical problems. This means you’ll need to be knowledgeable, approachable and adaptable; stepping in to assist proactively, wherever you see a potential bump in the road.

This is a highly visible role within the business and, as well as helping others, you’ll have significant opportunities to train, develop yourself, and to progress your own career at Red Embedded.

What you will need to bring

Mandatory Skills

  • Really strong, hands-on, software engineering experience
  • Great knowledge of modern software engineering techniques – such as object-oriented design, unit testing/test-driven development, CI/CD, use of code analysis tools
  • You are likely to have experience of developing in languages such as C++ or Java, but you’ll also be comfortable with the idea of learning new languages and technologies quickly
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams
  • Experience mentoring and supporting other engineers on your team. While this doesn’t need to be in a formal management/leadership capacity, you will be a “people person” and a very strong team player, and you’ll know how to encourage a team to achieve it’s technical goals and hit deadlines
  • A desire to grow your career – you’ll be the sort of person who is always up for a challenge, interested to learn new things and gain new experience
  • A flexible, can-do approach
  • Outstanding communication skills; you’ll be confident discussing technical matters with both technical and non-technical people
