Nagravision Protect and Connect integration for 4k set-top box
For a leading Polish TV operator
Challenge
This project focused on integrating a new cardless conditional access system and developing related skills and capabilities. It required integrating the Conditional Access System (CAS) and Digital Rights Management (DRM) for 4K premium content within a Secure Video Path/Trusted Execution Environment (SVP/TEE).
End-to-end integration in the customer environment was necessary, along with cooperation among multiple CAS, DRM, and SoC vendors. Building trusted relationships and establishing a trusted reputation with the customer were also key challenges to address.
Solution
The solution involved porting and integrating the Conditional Access System (CAS) and Digital Rights Management (DRM) for both broadcast and IP/OTT delivery. This included support for satellite content and non-linear IP services, including catch-up, start-over, timeshift, nPVR, and VOD services.
Integrated SoC and CAS modules were crucial for managing 4K premium content within a Secure Video Path.
Consult Red were first to successfully certify the SoC platform with the customer’s chosen DRM. We collaborated with the silicon vendor to optimise the performance of high-bitrate MPEG-DASH content playback and decryption.
Learnings
The project’s learnings included gaining new capabilities related to Conditional Access System (CAS) and Digital Rights Management (DRM) within a Secure Video Path/Trusted Execution Environment (SVP/TEE).
We developed specific domain knowledge and solutions that the customer could not manage without our support. We could also support the customer’s direction and requirements for successful project delivery, even when they extended beyond the initial project scope.
This experience also facilitated the development of a commercial relationship that allowed us to agree on “out of contract” deliverables.
Impact and Value
The project delivered the first successful certification of the selected SoC and DRM platform, marking a significant milestone. We achieved optimised performance for high-bitrate content playback and decryption, enhancing the overall user experience.
The project also ensured end-to-end integration within the customer environment.
